Services and Rates

Editing involves a very broad range of functions; therefore, most editors are specialists. POV Editorial Services specializes in developmental editing and copyediting (copy editing) of nonfiction, literary fiction, upmarket fiction, historical fiction, satirical fiction, young adult fiction, and the following genres of popular fiction: mystery, suspense, fantasy, and science fiction. My services and rates are described in detail below.

   Developmental

         Editing

What it is

The first step in the editing process, developmental editing inspires and empowers the author and demands much from the editor.

Developmental editing concerns itself with this most seminal of facts: people read because they want to be moved (fiction) or informed (nonfiction); in all cases, readers want to be engaged. The extent to which a work satisfies these desires depends upon how effectively the work is structured and how effectively it connects with one's intended audience. Those factors are only adequately evaluated in the absence of bias. In works of fiction, there are still more factors that contribute to reader satisfaction:

  • genre expectations

  • character development (including characters' goals, motivations, and conflicts)

  • point of view (POV)

  • plot

  • pacing

  • setting

Developmental editors analyze these elements, identify issues that hinder reader engagement, and suggest solutions that are faithful to the author's voice and content and hold the promise of greater reader satisfaction. Suggested solutions are accompanied by examples for implementation that can be adopted, modified, or discarded at the author's discretion.

When properly performed, developmental editing is an invaluable tool that inspires and empowers you to revise and further hone your story for publication.

POV's developmental editing services:

Full Developmental Edit

This service provides:

A detailed letter (called a "revision letter"), arranged in a what-why-how format that identifies what the major reader satisfaction issues are, discusses why they are problematic, and suggests solutions that are illustrated by examples of how to implement them.

Annotations throughout the manuscript. A companion to the revision letter, but providing significantly more detail, the annotated manuscript benefits the author by presenting issues and solutions in a detailed what-why-how format at those points in the manuscript where issues occur.

    Copyediting

A manuscript is ready for copyediting (copy editing) upon completion of developmental editing and manuscript revision. Copyediting is an indispensable editorial function that promotes both reader enjoyment and proper preparation of one's manuscript for publication. The function of copyediting is to resolve errors, inconsistencies, and certain other distractions in the manuscript. (For rates, please click here or see "Rates" section below.)

Areas that fall under the copyediting function

Errors and distractions that fall under the copyediting function can be grouped into four basic areas:

  • Mechanics: spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.

  • Language: grammar, usage, consistency, concision, clarity, and cohesion (amount of language editing performed depends on the level of copyediting chosen by the client).

  • Content: logic, organization, and flow of ideas (amount of content editing performed depends on the level of copyediting chosen by the client).

  • Correlation: pagination of chapters in relation to the table of contents; correct numbering of chapters.

How copyediting is performed

Depending on the level of copyediting the client chooses (click here or see below), the editor treats errors and distractions in one or more of the following ways:

  • Correct indisputable errors that have clear-cut solutions. However, many problems and solutions are not so clear-cut, and often there is more than one possible remedy. For multi-remedy issues, a copyeditor will do one or more of the following:

  • Query (point out to, or "flag" for) the author, who will then decide on whether or how to implement a solution. Queries often contain discussions that provide guidance to the author.

  • Supply suggestions for revision.

  • Revise an awkward item or rewrite a faulty passage while preserving the author’s voice (NOTE: authors may reject or modify editorial revisions and rewrites).

Levels of copyediting and services provided at each level

The publishing industry has adopted the practice of designating three levels of copyediting services—light, medium, or heavy—depending on the manuscript's needs. The table below contains a detailed list of the services provided with each level of copyediting. (For rates, please click here or see "Rates" section below.)
